Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association

A maintainable mini-archive for a volunteer heritage association — replacing a decades-old wall-of-text site with a structure they can run and grow themselves.

The Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association preserves the industrial stories of Newcastle and the Hunter. Their existing site was an artefact in its own right — a static, undesigned page of dense text, unchanged for years and effectively unmaintainable by the people who relied on it.

The brief wasn't a bespoke build. It was the opposite: a system the client could actually operate. NIHA is run by retired volunteers with limited technical confidence, so the real design problem was custodianship, not pixels. A hand-rolled framework would have been the wrong tool — impressive to build, impossible for them to maintain. The leverage was in choosing restraint.

The site is a deliberately low-weight WordPress build, structured as a mini-archive of collections — steelworks, maritime, defence, transport, coal mining — with a clear information architecture the association can expand without a developer. Collection categories and items follow a consistent pattern, so adding new material is a matter of filling a familiar template rather than touching layout or code. Events, the Delprat Cottage page, and research support are all editable in place.

The outcome is a working, public, self-sustaining web presence: a base structure built to be grown, handed to non-technical custodians who can keep it alive long after handoff.
