Nature's Frames
Photorealistic Australian landscapes authored in Unreal Engine 5, exhibited as prints and a cinematic render reel.
Nature's Frames was the major project of my Bachelor of Communication (Media Production), exploring the creation of photorealistic scenes inspired by the Australian landscape. Built in Unreal Engine 5 using procedural environment techniques and free Quixel Megascans assets, the work set out to do two things: construct dynamic, believable 3D environments, and capture them cinematically under a range of lighting conditions and virtual lens options within the engine.
The result was presented as a series of art prints alongside a shot-reel video of renders — each scene framed and lit as a piece of cinematography rather than a game environment, with different virtual optics used to shift the mood and depth of each frame. The project was exhibited at the Blackstone Gallery in 2023.
The throughline was framing nature as a cinematographer would: choosing the lens, the light, and the moment, and treating a procedurally built digital landscape as a place worth photographing.
