Delprat Cottage, VR

A virtual reality recreation of a restored heritage cottage in Mayfield, NSW.

Commissioned through a Port of Newcastle community grant and delivered by the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle, this project reconstructs Delprat Cottage — the former residence of BHP manager G.D. Delprat, now under the custodianship of the Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association. The capture pipeline combined Matterport for preliminary floorplans, Artec scanning for artefacts, and Polycam and LiDAR for targeted detail work. I built the final experience in Unreal Engine 5, handling the 3D assembly, lighting, and interaction design. The output is a VR application that runs on PC-tethered headsets, allowing visitors to walk through a space that most will never see in person. It was equal parts technical problem-solving and creative experimentation — an open question about what VR can do for industrial heritage.
